Sperm Freezing Or Cryopreservation
Men can face a myriad of health disorders and medical procedures that can affect their fertility as they age. And once the sperms lose their motility and count, regaining their fertility is almost impossible, even with ART treatments. Hence, if you have a medical condition that would affect your fertility in the near future, sperm freezing is your best solution to ensure parenthood in your later years.
Sperm freezing is the process of analyzing, freezing, and preserving sperms to be used in the future. It is a straightforward process that uses a liquid nitrogen-based storage system to keep sperms in vials. Dr. Partha Das and his team have one of the advanced embryology laboratories specializing in all forms of gamete cryopreservation which can be stored for many years with a renewal contract in place.
When To Opt For Sperm Freezing?
Anyone can opt to cryopreserve their sperms and it is most commonly recommended for any man who:
- Is growing older than 35 and wants to consider fatherhood at a later age
- Has a family history of fertility issues
- Has a high risk of reproductive problems due to their profession or living environment
- May have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Is about to undergo Vasectomy or a pelvic or testicular surgery
- Is diabetic or recently tested for diabetes, as it can lead to erectile dysfunction
- Lives away from home due to work
- Professional obligation and has to travel a lot
- Wants to have a backup sperm bank for future IVF treatments
How Does Sperm Freezing Work?
Sperm cryopreservation aims to store the sperm cells required to fertilize the female egg with high concentration and motility. After obtaining valid consent for semen collection and cryopreservation, the embryologist examines the semen sample collected from the male partner and ensures that the sperm cells are in good health and
motility. The sample is then equilibrated with a cryopreservation medium and evenly placed in pre-labeled vials along with a test thaw vial. The final sample is placed into liquid nitrogen storage, usually at -196°C.
How Are Frozen Sperms Utilized?
The sperms that are frozen through cryopreservation remain as healthy and motile as they were when collected. You can choose to utilize them at any point in time after storage through different IVF treatments.
When you do so, the semen sample is simply thawed and brought down to room temperature. The sperms are extracted from the sample and prepared for insemination.
If the sperms are healthy enough, they can be directly used for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) where the sperms are directly injected into the uterus during the female partner’s ovulation window. If the sperms had poor motility or concentration during storage, the IVF Specialist may suggest In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) for a higher success rate.
Sperm freezing has absolutely no side effects on the sperms as it is a safe and standardized procedure that continues to evolve with newer technology. Hence, if you are aware of any risks that might affect your fertility, feel free to consult Dr. Partha Das and know the process of semen cryopreservation at our sperm freezing center in Dubai.
