Minimal Stimulation IVF

Minimal Stimulation IVF

As women age, the chances of conceiving naturally diminish.

However, with advancements in reproductive technology, older women now have an alternative called Minimal Stimulation IVF to help them achieve their dream of starting or expanding their families.

Keep reading to learn more about minimal stimulation IVF and explore its benefits and considerations tailored to older women.

What is minimal stimulation IVF?

Minimal stimulation IVF or low stimulation IVF is a modified approach to In Vitro Fertilization that involves using less medication and less invasive methods than traditional IVF.

This method combines oral medications to stimulate ovulation, encourage follicle development and support egg maturation.

This form of IVF boosts your body to produce quality eggs for fertilization instead of a larger quantity of eggs obtained in conventional IVF.

How is minimal stimulation IVF better for older women?

Women of all ages with an extremely low ovarian reserve and who produce very few eggs benefit most from minimal stimulation IVF. This includes those older women, i.e., over 35-40.

Your natural cycle, stress, and other factors reduce your egg reserve as you age. No matter how aggressive the stimulation of your ovaries is, there are only so many eggs left to mature.

That’s why fertility specialists encourage minimal or low-stimulation IVF for women with very low egg reserves who do not respond well to conventional IVF.

Women with diagnosed infertility, who are younger and in otherwise good health, are often better suited for traditional IVF.

Traditional IVF yields a greater quantity of viable eggs, making the odds of success that much better. However, if you have a low egg count and conventional IVF produces very few eggs for fertilization, your odds of a successful outcome will be the same with minimal IVF stimulation.

Reproductive medicine has perfected minimal stimulation IVF in recent years. The result is the ideal approach for older women who want to use their own eggs.

This process is the perfect combination of using your body’s natural abilities with the boost of lower-dose hormones to encourage the maturation of the best quality eggs.

What are the benefits of minimal stimulation IVF for older women?

While the effectiveness of any fertility treatment can vary depending on individual circumstances, there are a few reasons why minimal stimulation IVF may be considered a better solution for older women:

  1. Lower medication dosage: Minimal stimulation IVF uses lower doses of fertility medications, which results in fewer side effects, pain, and discomfort.
  2. Reduces risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): With fewer medications, there is a decreased likelihood of complications like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), where the body overreacts to the hormones stimulating egg production
  3. Reduces risk of multiple pregnancies: Older women undergoing IVF have a higher likelihood of multiple pregnancies when higher doses of fertility drugs are used. Multiple pregnancies increase complications for both the mother and the babies. Minimal stimulation IVF’s lower medication dosage may minimize the chances of multiple pregnancies.
  4. Less physical and emotional stress: IVF treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding, and older women may be more susceptible to these stresses. Minimal stimulation IVF involves fewer injections and less monitoring, which can alleviate some of the physical and emotional burdens associated with the treatment.

Additionally, minimal stimulation IVF uses fewer medications, making it a potentially more affordable option for women who may require multiple treatment cycles. This factor is crucial for older women with limited financial resources.

What is the success rate of minimal stimulation IVF?

The success rates of minimal stimulation IVF can vary depending on various factors, including the woman’s age, ovarian reserve, and specific fertility issues.

In general, minimal stimulation IVF  success rates are slightly lower when compared to conventional IVF.

In a recent study, 564 women aged 39 or younger were randomly assigned to minimal stimulation or traditional IVF. They underwent treatment over six months.

While 63% of the conventional IVF group conceived, 49% of the minimal stimulation IVF group conceived and eventually gave birth. None of the minimal stimulation IVF group developed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
